ADVANCE-DESIGNED TO MAKE MODIFICATIONS EASY

The sole of Advance Orthopedic Footwear incorporates SoleTech’s InstaFlex® construction and was expressly designed to facilitate the modification, buildup and fabrication process. Utilizing a range of EVA, Crepe and rubber sheets from SoleTech you can quickly and easily modify the Advance orthopedic shoe to meet your patient’s needs.

The key element of the unique InstaFlex construction is the combination of a high abrasion EVA shell with a rubber insert permanently molded to the EVA. The EVA is lightweight, instantly flexible, and provides excellent cushioning, while the rubber outsole provides outstanding abrasion resistance, slip resistance, and oil resistance.

The EVA sole is solid EVA—there are no weight relief holes in the heel, which would cause problems when making a modification.
Getting Started

Separating the sole is the first step in any modification process. When looking at the Advance sole in profile you will notice two lines, which extend around the side of the EVA shell. The bottom of these two lines is the "cut" line, which is the guide to use when cutting and separating the sole from the shoe. Follow this line with either a band saw or knife to make a smooth separation.

Once this is completed buff each part lightly to create a smooth surface. As a general rule all the parts prepared for bonding should be roughed and clean of dust. Proceed as you normally would to complete the build-up/elevation process and re-cement the outsole to the build-up. In those cases where you have added a flare to widen the shoe’s base of support, you can use the SoleTech OrthoSole to provide the same sole appearance and performance characteristic of the original sole. This will prevent a split and widen operation and provide a continuous smooth surface on the bottom of the shoe. The OrthoSole is the same thickness and has the same abrasion resistance as the InstaFlex sole.

In those cases where the patient is extremely hard on his/her shoes, the OrthoSole is an excellent replacement outsole for Advance and other types of footwear. Simply rough and even out the current outsole; or cut off the present outsole, rough the surface and cement the OrthoSole using the appropriate adhesive.

Shoe Modifications-Special Cases

Attachment of Caliper Plate or Solid Stirrup.

There are many options for this operation, but we recommend the following two.
1. Separate the sole by beginning at the heel at the second line from the bottom and cut at a 45º angle toward the scooped out area of the shank. When you reach the shank proceed straight across the cut, or bottom line separating the sole from the shoe. Add a 1/8" piece of rubber midsoling material to the bottom of the shoe. At this point attach the caliper plate to the bottom of the shoe by means of rivets. The separated sole should be routed out to fit back over the caliper plate, while lying smoothly on the shoe. Re-cement the outsole to the shoe.

2. An alternative method would be to separate the sole in the manner above, but to use a 3/4 length sock lining of 1/8" firm leather inside the shoe and rivet the caliper plate using the leather as the base. Re-cement the sole as above.

Split and widen:
The Advance shoe can be split and widened in the rare instance that the shoe is not wide enough or deep enough at the arch region. It is recommended after you perform the split and widening that you use the OrthoSole to complete the modification and still allow the outsoles to match.
Rocker Bottom with an Extended Steel Shank:
Proceed in the normal fashion to separate the sole and build the desired rocker bottom. A 11/2" channel should be ground into the midsole to house the shank. A 1/8" x 11/2" piece of crepe covers the shank and is sanded to blend into the midsole. This is then covered with a piece of 11/2" piece of dacron tape to prevent the shank from working its way through the outsole. The final step is to replace the outsole that was separated in the first step.

Custom Shoes:
Very often custom shoes use crepe with a diamond or weave design as the outsole. Many patients in custom shoes drag their feet excessively and wear out the lateral heel prematurely. One possible solution would be to use the OrthoSole as the outsole when it comes time to repair or replace the sole of a custom shoe. This will help prevent premature wear of the outsole.
